Since moving further south, it's been a while since I've been to the Spotted Donkey Cantina. So yesterday, I decided to take a road trip with a friend. We drove through bike week in Cave Creek, and then over to the sSpotted Donkey. The p April 17 lace was hopping when we arrived, but we scored a table in the bar area during happy hour, which was unexpected for a weekend! We ordered a couple of drinks which were fantastic, and the Cantina shooters. Just as I remembered, they were fantastic! A great way to start a meal. My dining companion ordered the chimichanga, which he devoured! He said it was very good and so filling! I ordered the street enchiladas, with the pork. Oh my! The food was fantastic. Full of flavor texture tender pork, the sauces were incredible. Even the beans were just spot on! I can't wait to go back and enjoy more of their menu items! Highly recommended!
We loved this place!!! Best restaurant on the property!!! We had the nachos the carne asada and the chimichanga to go with cocktails and of course chocolate cake!!!
Twice in two days. The first meal was amazing after a long day of travel. Went with the super polite and friendly staff recommendations and I was delighted with my meal. Chimichanga. The next day I was hungry after a long run that put me here again. Surf and turf burrito. New meal, same awesome experience. Lot busier today but easily got a table (Sunday night).
Friendly staff Attentive Excellent food Chris was our server. He was a super nice guy. We look forward to going back when its a little warmer to sit outside.
The Spotted Donkey is amazing, but I highly recommend a reservation! We walked in on a weeknight and were offered bar seating. No worries, though, the bartender, Will, was great! My husband and I ordered an appetizer, entrees and soft drinks. Everything was delivered lightening fast! I chose the pork carnita tacos (4 miniature size with rice and beans). I will definitely order again! Chef's kiss - amazing! My husband tried the enchiladas (beef and cheese) and cleaned his plate. :) We had the chips and salsas, too (three come with the appetizer). My favorite was a black bean salsa and my husband loves the green one. I highly suggest kicking off your visit with that app.
Stopping in for happy hour is definitely the way to go! The drinks are strong, the food portions are good, and the staff is friendly. The nachos weren't what I expected, but honestly, they were even better! I had the prickly pear margarita after reading the prickly pears are harvested right on site. So delicious! The only disappointment was the guacamole. I could tell it had been made earlier in the day and wasn't as fresh as I would've liked.

This spot has a welcoming vibe with both table seating and a cozy bar area featuring a happy hour. The nachos on the happy hour menu were a generous portion--perfect for sharing. I had the calabacitas enchiladas, which were packed with a flavorful squash mixture, and the surf and turf burrito was absolutely stuffed and satisfying. Great place in a great location--definitely worth a visit! Service was also quick our waiter was attentive.
